Escanaba apartment complex receives a makeover for over $2 million
Escanaba, MI – March 2, 2022 – PK Companies, a family-based real estate firm in Okemos, MI, invested over $2 million in the rehabbing of Escanaba Apartments in Escanaba, MI. The majority of the work was completed in December of 2021.
PK Companies’ contractors replaced roofing, siding, windows, flooring, trim, appliances, plumbing and light fixtures, cabinets, vanities, countertops, and doors. They also painted the exterior and inside the units. Entry door replacement and hallway work will soon be completed. Concrete work will be completed when the weather allows. Oakwood Construction out of Okemos, MI was hired for the construction work.
The new construction has achieved Enterprise Green status. According to their website, “Enterprise Green Communities, the standard for sustainable futures, is the nation’s only national green building program designed explicitly for green affordable housing construction.”
The project used funds awarded from the IRS/MSHDA Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) Program.
Residents stayed with friends or family during the construction or stayed at a provided hotel room.
Willow Creek is an affordable rural development property with 56 units. It consists of two buildings and one and two-bedroom apartments, one story high. Willow Creek I was built in 1989 and Willow Creek II was built in 1993. This Upper Peninsula community is designed for persons 62 years of age or older and disabled of any age. In addition to a busy resident event calendar, residents have access to a community room, where they can socialize and do various activities. A barrier-free and rental subsidy waiting list are available.
“All of these improvements will benefit the residents who make Willow Creek their home, and we look forward to providing this much-needed affordable housing for many years to come,” said Area Director Ann Young.

The Willow Creek Apartments project is part of a larger ongoing development project with a total of 12 properties scattered throughout Michigan. The total construction cost for all 12 will be approximately $25,000,000.
